I’m still #2, but I’m miffed that Goodreads’ system is erratic.

Anyway, books read this week (all of them were comic books):

American Vampire, Vol. 4 by Scott Snyder

Chew, Vol. 4: Flambé by John Layman

Chew, Vol. 5: Major League by John Layman

Chew, Vol. 6: Space Cakes by John Layman

FreakAngels, Volume 1 by Warren Ellis

Locke & Key: Grindhouse by Joe Hill

iZombie, Vol. 1: Dead to the World by Chris Roberson

iZombie, Vol. 2: uVampire by Chris Roberson

iZombie, Vol. 3: Six Feet Under and Rising by Chris Roberson

iZombie Vol. 4: Repossessed by Chris Roberson

Noir: A Collection of Crime Comics

The Secret by Mike Richardson

The Unwritten, Vol. 1: Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity by Mike Carey

The Unwritten, Vol. 2: Inside Man by Mike Carey

The Unwritten, Vol. 3: Dead Man’s Knock by Mike Carey

The Unwritten, Vol. 4: Leviathan by Mike Carey

The Unwritten, Vol. 5: On to Genesis by Mike Carey

The Unwritten, Vol. 6: Tommy Taylor and the War of Words by Mike Carey

Torso by Brian Michael Bendis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 8: Dirge by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 9: The Cure by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 10: One More Time by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 0: Tales of Human Waste by Warren Ellis

That means I’m 7 books away from getting halfway through my 100 Books Year. If you’re wondering why I’m doing this, it’s because of two things. First, I am frustrated because I keep slacking on reading comic books. I see or hear a title and I want to read it, but I never get around to it because the internet takes up a lot of my time. If there is something that will take my time away from studies, it’s going to be reading, not the internet. Second, it’s because it’s the Year of the Dragon. I’m 24, imaginary readers! Hell if I’m going to be 25 without checking off something, anything in my bucket list.

If I finish 100 books by June, I might aim for another 100 books by the end of the year. Fingers crossed!

vecordious:

It feels strangely shameful to be #5. I could have studied or made friends instead of reading comic books. Then again, friends leave you.

That #1, though. HOW. Do you do that? Children’s picture books?

Kind of pissed that I should be in #3, since I read 19 books.

Books read on the first week of the year:

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Instructions by Neil Gaiman

Wonder Woman: Hiketeia by Greg Rucka

read on the second week of the year:

1984 by George Orwell

Black Charity by Bal Speer

Preacher, Vol. 5: Dixie Fried by Garth Ennis

Preacher, Vol. 6: War in the Sun by Garth Ennis

Preacher, Vol. 7: Salvation by Garth Ennis

Preacher, Vol. 8: All Hell’s a-Coming by Garth Ennis

Preacher, Vol. 9: Alamo

Scarlet, Vol. 1 by Brian Michael Bendis

The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan

The Underwater Welder by Jeff Lemire

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 2: Lust for Life by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 3: Year of the Bastard by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 4: The New Scum by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 5: Lonely City by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 6: Gouge Away by Warren Ellis

Transmetropolitan, Vol. 7: Spider’s Thrash by Warren Ellis

Wonder Woman, Vol. 1: Blood

Wonder Woman, Vol. 2: Guts

wonder Woman: Amazonia

Someday, I’ll put up a review of the whole or Transmetropolitan and Preacher.

"In your place, if there is pain nurse it, and if there is a flame, don’t snuff it out, don’t be..."

“In your place, if there is pain nurse it, and if there is a flame, don’t snuff it out, don’t be brutal with it. Withdrawal can be a terrible thing when it keeps us awake at night, and watching others forget us sooner than we’d want to be forgotten is no better. We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to feel nothing so as not to feel anything–what a waste.”

- Andre Aciman, Call Me by Your Name (via toujoursgai)

"The real story of modern empire of the corporatocracy that exploits desperate people and is..."

“
The real story of modern empire of the corporatocracy that exploits desperate people and is executing history’s most brutal, selfish, and ultimately self-destructive resource- grab has little to do with what was exposed in newspapers that morning and has everything to do with us… We prefer to believe the myth that thousands of years of human social evolution has finally perfected the ideal economic system, rather than to face the fact we have merely bought into a false concept and accepted it as gospel. We have convinced ourselves that all economic growth benefits humankind, and that the greater the growth, the more widespread the benefits. finally, we have persuaded one another that the corollary to this concept is valid and morally just: that people who excel at stoking the fires of economic growth should be exalted and rewarded, while those born at the fringes are available for exploitation.

This concept and its corollary are used to justify all manner of piracy - licenses are granted to rape and pillage and murder innocent people in Iran, Panama, Columbia, Iraq, and elsewhere. EHMs, jackals, and armies flourish for as long as their activities can be shown to generate economic growth and they almost always demonstrate such growth. Thanks to the biased “sciences of forecasting, econometrics, and statistics, if you bomb a city and then rebuild it, the data shows a huge spike in economic growth.
”

- John Perkins’ Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

2013 Resolution

To buy/read only fantasy/sci-fi books written by female writers for 2013, except for those by male writers I’ve read before.

That means, I’ll read only books by Octavia Butler, N.K. Jemisin, Libba Bray, Tamora Pierce, Kameron Hurley, etc.

Exceptions:

1. Charles Stross’ Accelerando. My interest has been building for two years, and it would really frustrate if I don’t get my hands on this.

2. Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot. Won’t you let a sci-fi heathen evolve?

3. Adam Roberts’ Yellow Blue Tibia. Same as #1.

Goals: (Specific books I’ve set out to read, and then we’ll see what happens.)

1. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

2. Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Dispossessed.

3. Octavia Butler’s Kindred.

4. Tamora Pierce’s Trickster’s Queen. (I’ve already read Trickster’s Choice.)

5. Kameron Hurley’s Gods’ War.

6. Libba Bray’s The Diviners.

7. N.K. Jemisin’s The Killing Moon.

Day 28/30: Book Challenge

nicoleheartsbooks:

Not really a good book in my opinion, but that title? Aces.
